Finding the perfect wellness café... my global favourites7 August 2019
I do love a good wellness café! Delicious food which I know is full of fresh ingredients that won’t cause a flare up, yummy drinks full of flavour... and a great commitment to the wellbeing of their customers.
As you know, I also love to travel. So I thought what better than to write a series of blogs giving you the lowdown on my favourite wellness cafés worldwide? And I’m starting at home, in the UK.
Wellness cafés in the UK
The Garden Hale, Manchester
This place does the most heavenly delicious organic dishes! They source all their ingredients locally and use them seasonally, so it’s all environmentally friendly, too. I love their probiotic bowl with lettuce, lentil cumin balls, purple kraut, refried black beans and sautéed kale with sesame and a kombucha vinaigrette, it is to die for, and I often have it with a flamingo latte with chai, beetroot and almond mylk. But what I really really love about this café is that it has a total focus on wellbeing. They run seasonal supperclubs, hold events with guest speakers offering expert advice on healthy living, and they run weekly morning yoga sessions followed by a healthy breakfast. I could live there!
Earthlings Inn, Bolton
The food here is entirely plant based so there is no dairy, eggs, refined sugar or additives in anything, which means it is completely my cup of (matcha) tea. I often head here for one of their delicious juices or smoothies, as it’s a lovely place to just relax and chill out either with my friends or by myself. They offer juice cleanse packaging and lifestyle coaching, plus they run workshops on healthy eating, drinking and living. Essentially it’s a fantastic place for anyone like me (and you lovelies) who love tasty food and drinks and want to keep it all super healthy.
Palm Vaults, Hackney
My Insta feed loves this place as it’s so full of colour! The décor is so pretty, all pinks and greens and rose golds, and they do a whole array of lattes in a rainbow of colours with different milks. They have a policy of no laptops or tablets, so it’s not a place to go and work but it is a place to go and socialise! The staff are uber friendly and they welcome dogs, too, so if you’re a dog owner or dog lover then it’s the place for you!
Farm Girl Café, Notting Hill
Three words. ALL DAY BRUNCH. I am a massive fan of brunch but I hate it when places have a strict policy of ending them at 10.30am. I often head here for an acai bowl or avocado toast, although they do have a great menu with other, non brunchy food on! I can’t recommend their Liquid Gold latte enough either, with turmeric, astragalus, ginger root, ground nutmeg and honey. It is tastier than it sounds and quite frankly it sounds amazing, so if you’re ever in Notting Hill then call in and give it a try.
The Shoreditch Grind
I love Shoreditch, the atmosphere is buzzing and vibrant, everywhere is open late (great if you’re a night owl, not that I am!) and it’s full of amazing places to eat and drink, like this ultra funky café. Stop by for a cold-pressed super greens juice, matcha latte or smooth fruity cocktail if you’re up for something a bit stronger.
There are three Redemption Bars in London Notting Hill, Covent Garden and (my favourite!) Shoreditch. The food is all vegan, gluten free and low in natural sugars, and the drinks are all alcohol free. But let me tell you, there isn’t a single boring thing on this menu! Check out the kombucha mimosa, blue butterfly pea latte, and mood-enhancing mocha, or treat yourself to raw chocolate bliss balls or jackfruit and soft tacos. I love the variety on this menu, the intriguing combinations of ingredients and the fact I know I can eat my heart out and feel great afterwards.
Tanya’s Raw Café, London
The founder of this café, Tanya Maher, is a hero of mine. She’s a wellness coach, chef, author and whole raft of other brilliant things, and her raw food café is a haven of organic, gluten-free delights. Think ‘living lasagna’ with courgette pasta, almond ricotta and sundried tomato marinara, probiotic sauerkraut (you know I love my probiotics) and coconut jerky, amongst a whole array of other goodies to choose from.
The Attendant Café, London
Yes there’s one in Shoreditch! But there are two others in London, too. My favourite is on the Shoreditch Triangle, it’s a great haven from the hustle and bustle. The décor is beautiful and calming, while the living plant wall makes a really interesting feature that’s so in keeping with the whole ethos of the place.
Farmacy Café, Notting Hill
This one has a real place in my heart as it’s where I launched my book The Beauty of Eczema, in the Alchemy Room, a beautiful, exclusive area filled with lush green plants. Try a Fire Starter syringe shot with ginger, turmeric, cayenne and lemon for a real boost, or one of their probiotic jars made with infused cashew ‘yoghurt’ and either berries and hemp seed or spiced apple and plum compote. Oh I want one of those right now! Tell Kyle the manager you are part of The Beauty of Eczema Warrior Tribe and I am sure he will be able to recommend the best foods for you!
I’ve loved writing about these wellness cafés and it’s so great that there are more and more places serving up healthy dishes and drinks, and focusing on sustainability and the environment. Don’t forget to let me know if you visit any of these, or let me know your own favourites @camilleknowles.
I’d love you to join my tribe. If you’re ready to start living a life beyond eczema, start your free membership today. You’ll get loads of tips and advice to help keep your skin healthy and glowing.
