My favourite... oils for eczema19 June 2019
Two questions I’m often asked is ‘What are your favourite oils for eczema’ and ‘Can I use essential oils for eczema’? So here I’ll try to answer them both!
Oils can be a great alternative to creams and they are so long lasting that they can be a good option if you’re travelling light, or just want something handy to keep in your bag.
But a BIG word of warning, please don’t ever use essential oils on broken skin, this can be dangerous and very damaging.
Oils for eczema... my skincare secrets
Okay, warning done, now I can tell you what I think is the best oil for eczema. It’s cheap, it’s multifunctional and it’s probably not what you were expecting. It’s, ta-dah... castor oil!
Yes that’s right my lovelies, good old castor oil. Let me tell you why:
It’s moisturising... in fact, it’s often added to cosmetics, cleansers and lotions to add hydrating properties.
It’s anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal... castor oil contains ricinoleic acid, which has anti-inflammatory properties, and has been shown to fight fungus
It’s great for hair and scalp... it can help to moisturise itchy skin and gives a moisture blast to dry or damaged hair.
This is my go-to oil, and I use it for any extremely dry areas, such as my elbows, hands or lips. I pour it in my bath, I use it on my scalp (see above!!), who knew one little oil could have so many brilliant uses?
You know I love to experiment with home-made remedies for eczema, so let me tell you about one of my favourite oil treatments.
- 60ml castor oil
- 40ml olive oil
- Dash of lavender oil
Shake all the ingredients up together and you have a brilliant, multi-use eczema product. Apply it all over your face and body, leave it for five minutes and rinse well with warm water. The oils draw out all the impurities and leave your skin completely cleansed and super moisturised. I like to use it on my face and body and then rinse off in the shower. Be warned, it’s thick and gloopy, but it works like a dream, lifting out all the dirt and giving your skin an uber-cleanse! Plus, you don’t need to moisturise afterwards because believe me your skin will feel so amazingly soft. Oh and you’ll smell great too! If I tell you a little bottle of this stuff saw me through a month of backpacking across Australia you’ll see why I refer to it as my wonder oil!
Another little tip using this super-mixture is to cover your feet in it before you go to bed, it’s a great way to relax and unwind.
I sometimes also like to put a few drops of lavender oil on my pillow before I go to bed. It’s a really calming, relaxing oil and I find it helps to soothe my mind and I can fall asleep faster. And we all know how much I love to get a good night’s sleep!
Have you ever made your own oil blend? I’m always on the lookout for new ideas, so don’t forget to let me know @camilleknowles if you have any ideas! Or I’d love to hear if you try out my miracle mixture, let me know how you get on.
Lots of love, Camille xx
