Managing a skin condition while managing a business20 February 2019
Managing a business is tough. Managing a skin condition is tough. So combining the two... yes you’ve guessed, can be twice as tough! But that’s not to say you can’t do it. I have!
I’ve my own YouTube channel, have written a book and am in the process of creating an online programme and developing a skincare range, because girlll, if anyone gets it I do!
Now I’m my own boss I don’t let anything get in my way, especially not my eczema. But I’ll be real with you here, this wasn’t always the case.
If you want to be your own boss but feel stuck in the mud because of your skin condition, you’re 100% not alone. Heck, I skipped school more often than not and struggled to hold down a regular job, never mind start and scale a business. I thought that was out of the question for me...
...until I realised that the only person creating that reality was yep, you guessed it me!
You see, I thought that I was ‘less than’ because of my skin. I spent my whole life waiting in the wings waiting for it to get better.
Thinking I would do well as soon as I got well but y’know what? That’s no way to live.
My life wasn’t my own. The day I kicked that glass-half-empty way of thinking to the kerb was the day my life started.
And now I know that eczema cannot hold me back, you back or anyone back, so long as we don’t let it.
A new way of thinking for managing your skin condition
So we know sitting around waiting for our eczema to heal itself isn’t going to work. And we know hiding away because of our eczema isn’t a real option for the rest of our lives. What to do? The trick is to reprogramme your mind so you see eczema as a friend, not a foe.
Seriously? Yes seriously.
I’m a firm believer that things don’t happen to you in life they happen for you and skin conditions (or anything that has to do with body image for that matter) are no different. My eczema was here to teach me a life lesson and that was to keep calm.
What I learnt to realise over the years was that when I was unhappy my eczema would flare up, and when I was happy it wouldn’t.
It was guiding me all along to my true purpose in life running my own business. And although I’ve never worked so hard or long in my life, my eczema flare ups have been at bay, for the most part.
Once upon a time I couldn’t even say the word eczema as it made me feel so sick to my stomach. But now my whole brand revolves around shouting from the rooftops about it to help other people. Not to mention showing images of my skin condition at its worst. Imagine that!
But that’s not to say my eczema doesn’t pop up to say hello now and again like a long-lost FRIEND (not foe, remember!) on Facebook.
I stress out, like we all do, that I’m not good enough to run my own business. That I’m not smart enough...
... or savvy enough...
... or clear-skinned enough...
And then I stress that I’m not qualified enough to run a brand that boasts ‘freedom from eczema’ if I’m not free of it 100% of the time.
But I am actually all of these things. And so are you. When you’re on the edge of falling into the deep, dark tunnel of self-loathing it’s time to slow down, take a deep breath and tap into your self-care toolbox to self-empower instead.
Ask yourself: Who am I not to run my own business? Who am I not to share my story with the world?
Tell yourself: I am smart. I am successful. And most importantly, I am lovable and I am worthy.
My HOPE principles
I’d like to share with you how I keep my skin glowing, while launching my own brand and working my butt off.
These are my HOPE principles, which I’ve created to help you live a life beyond eczema.
H - Home environment
I find my happy place in the house and decorate it with plants, crystals, candles... anything to make it ‘my’ zone of zen.
I then up my sleep by going to bed earlier. Sleep is so powerfully healing, not only for our minds and bodies, but for our skin too.
Our skin is our body’s largest organ, so is it any wonder it needs lots of rest? I don’t think so!
O - Optimism
To live a cup-half-full life I create vision boards to remind myself of my goals, say daily affirmations in the mirror every morning and write in my gratitude journal every night.
A positive mindset is key to leading a calmer life and was the catalyst behind my healing journey.
P - Purpose and Pampering
I also make sure to check in with my purpose as much as I do my family and friends. Is my career filling my cup or is it draining me of energy?
I pamper myself with natural products morning and night as an act of self-love and self-care too. Why save it for the spa when you can do it daily in your bedroom and bathroom?!
E - Eco-therapy, Exercise and Eating Well
My favourite thing of all is to get out in nature, and connect to the mother. I move my body in a way she loves (with walks, runs and yoga flows) and feed her in the way she loves too, (which is mostly plant-based, with a cheeky coffee here and there).
I let go of perfectionism and let my HOPE principles guide me back to the clearer-skinned, calmer-minded BossBabe I know I am!
If you’ve thought about starting your own business but dismissed it because you’re not sure you can manage it along with your eczema, I hope reading my story has given you some inspiration.
Lots of love, Camille xx
