Eating well abroad: how I find wellness cafés

23 January 2019

I used to really panic about what I could eat when I was travelling, worrying I’d end up veering too far away from my usual healthy-eating plan and winding up with a flare up. But now I know that eating well abroad is actually pretty easy. In fact, it’s super exciting!

To be honest, it hasn’t always been this way. But thanks to the wellness trend that started a few years ago, finding places that offer vegan, gluten-free and plant-based options is much less tricky. I’ve made it my mission to discover new wellness cafés right across the world. Because have I mentioned before that I LOVE food?!

My tips for eating well abroad

Google is my best friend for finding places if I’m in an area I don’t know well. I generally search for ‘Wellness cafés in xyz’ or sometimes I narrow this down to ‘vegan café’. In vegan cafés the food is almost always plant based and it ticks off my ‘dairy-free’ option. I just double check my choices are gluten free and I’m good to go.

There’s a whole world of healthy eating out there to be discovered, so don’t be afraid to branch out and give some new places a try. It really isn’t worth risking a flare up and every nationality puts their own twist on the recipes, so you’ll discover some tasty new treats in the process!

My favourite places in Palma

I’ve spent the past few months living in Palma, so it was important to find a few great places to eat and drink. Here are my top three:

Cocos Deli
This is my best friend’s deli but I’m not being biased here the food is absolutely sensational! Everything is so healthy and perfect for my plant-based diet. Think delicious salads, freshly pressed juices, raw cakes and gluten-free and sugar-free options. They also do serve chicken and fish, so there’s plenty of choice for whatever takes your fancy that day!

All the packaging and straws are biodegradable sooooo important, healthy eating is about a healthy planet, too. You can eat in or take away. Lots of their dishes have an Asian twist, they’re so incredibly tasty it’s hard to put into words go and see for yourself!

Ziva
I love love love this place, especially its raw sandwich. They use locally grown and/or organic ingredients, great for the environment and great for you! Everything is completely plant based and made without dairy, colouring, preservatives and processed sugar perfect for us eczema sufferers looking to keep our skin glowing by nourishing ourselves from within. All the containers here are biodegradable or compostable, too.

Ziva also offers a juice fasting programme for anyone looking to do a cleansing detox without the faff of preparation and juicing. They’ll work with you to find the right programme for your lifestyle and to fit in with your own diet (eg vegan, vegetarian). It’s a brilliant way to give your system a reboot and get rid of those nasty toxins!

Avocado
Mmmmm they do the best gluten-free wraps and deliver them right to my door. WINNING! You know sometimes when you haven’t been shopping or you just don’t feel like preparing anything yourself it can be easy to let things slide and start picking at unhealthy food? So I love that I can get healthy food brought right to me if I’m feeling lazy! They also do ultra-tasty breakfasts, smoothies and salads, which are brilliant to enjoy in the balmy Palma sunshine. Absolute bliss.

So these are some of my favourite places in Palma, do let me know what you think if you try any of them. And I’d love to hear from you about your favourite wellness cafés across the globe you’ll find me @camilleknowles.

Lots of love, Camille xx
